Legends to me:
Bobby Allison, Dale Earnhardt, Ralph Earnhardt, Ned Jarrett, Benny Parsons, David Pearson, Lee Petty, Richard Petty, Curtis Turner, Joe Weatherly, Cale Yarborough
Favorite tracks:
Bristol Motor Speedway, Daytona Int’l Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Richmond Int’l Raceway
First race I went to:
First NASCAR race was The Winston in 1996, but I went to other races to watch my cousin race at Mid-Ohio racetrack in the ‘80s and also saw some open-wheel stuff at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, Oh.
Races I regularly go to:
Daytona 500/Speedweeks, Las Vegas
Most memorable NASCAR moment(s):
Getting this job!!!
I also was at The Winston in 2000 when Dale Jr. won, which was also the night the bridge collapsed at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. An amazing night all around. My buddy Jimmy Vogel and I were among some of the first on the scene when the bridge collapsed and you felt like you wanted to do something to help—but the best way to help was to get the heck out of the way of the emergency folks so they could do their jobs, and they did them well. It was even more impressive than what Junior did on the track that night!
Marital status:
Married
Profile:
Not sure what to put here. I’m old, or at least older (46). But I feel young and try to act young.
My greatest accomplishment(s) in life were marrying my wife, Sarah, and raising the four wonderful children we have together - Andrew, Elizabeth, Emma and Michaal. (All great kids!)
Prior to joining NASCAR.com in January, 2007, I covered the NFL and the Carolina Panthers for nearly 12 years for the Winston-Salem Journal - a great job, too, until the Journal decided it needed to save money and didn’t want to invest in covering the Panthers any longer. I also covered the NBA and the Cleveland Cavaliers in Ohio for 10 1/2 years prior to taking the job with the Journal.
Other interests:
I love writing books on the side, and have written five—including The Wildest Ride: A History of NASCAR. It has been the most popular and by far the biggest seller of any of my books.

Carl is my hero!!!
Personally, I only wish Carl woulda dumped Busch… just like he does to everyone else on the track. If all the drivers that owed one to Baby Kyle would pay him back, he wouldnt finish a race the rest of the season.
As far as Baby Kyle’s whining when others to do him as he does to them… I have a super-sized brick of cheese to go with his whine.
What really bites for the fans is that all the other drivers drive entirely too “clean”. That is why Kyle stands out so much. As far as comparing him to the greats like Earnhardt Sr, I dont think there is any comparison. Wish he were still here, then there would be 2 drivers on the track that would pay back KB’s pushin and shovin.

Rivalries
ALL RIGHT IT’S BACK ON!!!!!!!
I say thank You for a GREAT RACE and not another “yawner” as seen in the past.someone has a dominant car and leads all or most of the laps and wins….boring. I have been a NASCAR fan since I can remeber. I remeber watching the Daytona 500 for the first time with My Dad back in the mid-late 70’s. became a Family Tradition so to speak,
Bobby Allison,Buddy Baker,Cale Yaurbrouro ( can never spell His name correctly),Harry Gant,Bill Elliot and yes Dale Earnhardt.
what would NASCAR have now if they NEVER allowed the kind of racing back then to take place? Dale was well known for the ol "bump-n-run" now seems as many are perfecting it. what if NASCAR had put a stop to that back than? would Bristol or other tracks be filled to capacity? I feel that NASCAR SHOULD repremand a Driver when He is "driving" His car and NOT "DRIVING" His car. I mean there is a fine line when a Driver does something purely stupid that could cause injury or death to someone else....what Kyle did was COOL...as was Edwards reaction.....had Kyle done the scene from "Days Of Thunder" where Cruise came in to the pits, put on fresh tires and than exited at full speed only to wreck the Winner and total His own car......now that is TOO EXTREME and is where NASCAR would be expected to interviene. the days of the old "bump-grind" seems to be a thing of the past, as when the races come to Bristol My Racing Buddies and I refer to it as ..."The NASCAR version "Demolition-Derby" Everyone wants to see racing....pays to see a GREAT race... and if there is a little "beating-n-banging" going on NASCAR should first think if is was/is an infraction before repremanding anyone.I Boys will be Boys .... "the only thing that seperates Men from Boys is the price of thier toys". I say have NASCAR ALLOW rivalries, as with any other sport, and sit back and watch the fireworks as it makes for good ol southern racing as We remember from over the years. We all here in Texas say ......WHEN THE GREEN FLAG WAVES,PUT THE HAMMER DOWN,LET THE ROUGH SIDE DRAG,AND RUN BOYS RUN !!!!!!
CAN’T WAIT TILL SUN NIGHT’S RACE FROM CALIFORNIA!!!!!!!!....will it be “pay-back time” or will NASCAR refuse to see it as good ol racing?

Rain Day
Well Joe nice comment about the rain race! Even Carl Edwards enjoyed it and I want to see more of it. It adds another twist to the strategy of racing that should be continued! The next time the rain comes I think the teams will be a little more prepared with better wiper springs and ducting for air for the inside of the windshield.
My hats off to NASCAR for racing in the rain!!!

Tony Stewart
Hi, Joe Just would like to comment on what I think about Tony Stewart. I live in Canada and yesterday I went to one of Tonys signings. I am a very big Tony Stewart fan. My family would say obsessed. I hope that Tony knows how much of an impact he had on me and I’m sure alot of other people by doing that yesterday. That made my day. I will have a smile on my face for a long time every time I think of that day. With all those people there he took the time to chat with me for a few seconds. That made a big impact on me and always will. Tony is a great person in my opion. I will be behind him what ever he does.

Stewarts Gamble
While I admire Tony Stewart, I wouldn’t call this an admirable gamble. I am really not seeing a downside for Tony. He’ll have assistance from Chevy, access to the Hass windtunnel and the thing that makes cars go faster, money. He may have a focus problem being an owner and driver, but it is happening in the sport at all levels. Robby Gordon has been doing it for years, Michael Waltrip is entering the second year of it and it is getting better for him. I would not stay up late at night worrying if Tony made the right decision. He will be fine.
